Dear Kuumba Friends and Family,

We write with heartbreaking news. Due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, Harvard is advising the suspension of major gatherings on campus for the immediate future. Our highest concern has been to provide a safe and healthy environment for Anniversary celebrants, but we have come to the difficult decision that this will not be possible by our April date. In conversation with the chair of Harvard’s Coronavirus Task Force and the director of Harvard’s Office for the Arts, we are thus writing to inform you that Kuumba’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, originally planned for April 24-26, 2020, will be rescheduled for a new date during the 2020-2021 school year.

Refunds on anniversary packages purchased from Kuumba will be issued to all registered attendees by individual order reference number. If you have not received an email from Eventzilla issuing you a full refund by March 13, 2020, please reach out to anniversary@kuumbasingers.org. Please contact hotels and airlines directly for travel refunds; you may wish to reference this cancellation letter as well as the linked Harvard policy.

We would like to thank the countless individualsstudents, alumni, and friendswho have poured their hearts into planning for this event. We have already registered over 150 participants for the celebration, and know that dozens more were planning to make their way to Cambridge in April. In the meantime, we have raised $300,000 toward our $500,000 50th Anniversary Endowment Campaign: an extraordinary testament to the generosity of the Kuumba community and a bold vision for the choir’s future. By the celebration next year, we look forward to reaching our full goal with your support.

You will hear from us again soon with two updates. The first will outline amended plans for virtual celebrations with Kuumbabes across the globe to coincide with our original celebration date. The second will announce a new date for the 50th Anniversary Weekend. We hope that you will be able to join us for a gathering sure to be even sweeter for this unforeseeable delay.

In the meantime, thank you for your love of Kuumba and your enthusiasm for our choir’s remarkable milestone. With any questions, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with Kuumba President Cindy Zeufack (president@kuumbasingers.org), 50th Co-Chairs Sarah Gutema and Jade Woods (anniversary@kuumbasingers.org), or Alumni Board President Linda Jackson Sowell (ljacksonsowell@gmail.com).

Sincerely,

The Kuumba Singers, the Alumni Board, and Director Sheldon K. X. Reid
